A quick ‘happy new year’ message to all etherfarm readers. Thanks again to those of you who stop by regularly. Look for more in 2004. More of what? I don’t know. Just more.

I left Manila at 11:30pm on December 31st, flew 11 hours, and arrived in San Francisco at 6pm on December 31st. I traveled back in time almost 5 hours, though it took me 11 hours to do it. I’m sure glad I didn’t get that as a math story problem in grade school.

Filipinos love fireworks. As New Year approaches, the stores, malls, and streets are overflowing with fireworks vendors selling everything from firecrackers to rockets so large I think they might be leftover SCUD missles.

I particularly liked the name of this bundle:

I’ve copied over all 16GB of photos I took on my trip and I’m sifting through them now. A good portion of that 16GB figure is comprised of bracketed shots or shoots from particularly scenic places like the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, where I snapped a good 1.7GB of RAW photos in 4 hours. There are a few keepers; I did pretty well given the lighting conditions, which were poor and difficult on account of the weather.

Photos will appear in gestalt, as usual. Sixteen are up now; count on at least a couple dozen more from the trip making an appearance over the next two weeks or so.

Welcome back, and thanks for sharing your trip with me/us.  Posting before you returned was worth it, to me at least; it gives a feeling of live, he’s actually there now-ness to the entries.

big dipper, thanks for the welcome home. I enjoy reading others; travel diaries and understand well the appeal of “on the scene” reporting, so to speak. I decided pretty early on in my trip, though, that while writing about my travels often would be a necessity, posting those writings to the website would be pretty low on the list of priorities. In a quest to be as ‘meta’ as possible, I actually have a post written about posting, though that won’t make an appearance until day 14 or so.

I’ll still be posting both photos and blog entries regularly. While they’ll certainly be less immediate, hopefully they’re no less interesting.
