The eyes have it
The recent dearth of postings can be attributed to my left eye, which of late has been beyond bloodshot, sometimes feeling like exploding because someone overinflated it. The redness has gone down some in the last few days, thank goodness—the devilchild look just isn’t me. In any case, I’ve tried not to be on the computer very much, which seems to help. I’ve spent too many hours in the last week in the dark, listening to the radio with an icepack over my eye. During my seeing hours, so to speak, I grade the 30 8-10 page midterms I have on my desk in the hopes that I can hand them back a week from tomorrow.
As a result of my increased aural activity, I’ve heard quite a bit of commentary on all-things Iraq, the most interesting being a global call-in show jointly hosted by NPR and the BBC. People from Turkey, Pakistan, Finland, Scotland, and various states in the U.S.A. weighed in, and it was good to hear a variety perspectives from around the world.
I’ll be going to the doctor on Tuesday if I can get an appointment. Hopefully they don’t have to do anything gruesome like drain eyeball fluid or perform emergency operation on my brain. Come to think of it though, maybe the latter would solve some of my other problems.

Get medical help ASAP. If your vision seems okay it is probably an allergy or an infection. If tearing is excessive or inadequate, either can be from infection. Try over-the-counter drops with antiseptic-antibiotic. It cannot hurt anything, and keeping the eye irrigated should help until you see a specialist. If your vision is off and/or you have a headache or pain behind the eye, get emergency help immediately. From the looks of that bookspine there could be glue dust or binding dust, spores, etc., depending on storage, that can slough off onto your hands. If you rubbed your eyes while reading you could have innoculated only the one eye and set off an allergic reaction. It seems more likely that would affect both eyes and breathing if it were spores. My guess is an infection, and the worry is corneal scarring. Good luck.
